Foodbuzz 24x24: A Vegan Christmas Cookie Party!

My Mom and one of my best friends, Megan enjoy some cookies!

I had so much fun last night throwing a Christmas Cookie party for my friends and family! I was a baking fool in the kitchen for two days before, but still didn't have enough time to get everything ready! It was only my second time cooking or baking for a large crowd - so hopefully I'll get better in the future. I took a lot of great pictures to share with all of you and I can't wait to share all the recipes! My friends and family loved all of them!

I don't know about you guys, but I find baking cookies to be the hardest thing to bake. For some reason, my cakes and cupcakes always turn out really well, but with cookies it's always a toss up! Sometimes the bottoms burn or sometimes they're undercooked. This was definitely a challenge for me, but luckily I pulled through and through a great party! I just wish I could have taken more pictures, but I was too busy hosting and playing games with everybody! I did happen to get some great shots of some friends and family. You can see those shots below!

Gingerbread Men baking in the oven!

The reason I was throwing this Christmas cookie party is because I was chosen by the company, Foodbuzz, that does the advertising on my site as one of twenty four people to host an event on November 26th - where you serve a meal of your choice. I submitted my proposal saying that I would love to throw a party serving Christmas cookies to help my friends and family get into the Christmas spirit! I also wanted to give them a lesson on baking Vegan cookies, but we ended up not having enough time (or ingredients...) I'm going to share one recipe with you today + pictures from the party and pictures of the cookie recipes to come!

My Grandma's Melt-In-Your-Mouth Sugar Cookies

I remember my Great-Grandma, Grandma, and Mom always making a big batch of these delicious sugar cookies every year around the Holidays. The shortening and powdered sugar come together to make the most delicious sugar cookie I've ever had! My Mom even said that these were just as good as her Grandma's! I think this was definitely a Vegan success! The dough in this recipe doesn't work very well with making Christmas cookie cut-outs, but my other Grandma (pictured below...) has a great recipe for sugar cookie cut-outs that I will be sharing soon!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup applesauce
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp cream of tartar

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.

In a medium sized bowl cream together the powdered sugar, regular sugar, shortening, vegetable oil, applesauce, and vanilla. In a separate bowl sift together the flour, salt, baking soda, and tartar. Add the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients and blend until just combined.

Drop by the rounded tablespoon onto a greased or parchment paper lined baking sheet. Bake for 8-10 minutes until the edges are golden brown. Cool on a wire wrack for 2-3 minutes before serving.

And no party is complete without chips and dip, right? So I also had available -
